Tankers
Tanker sizes. Where each one loads.
Tankers are sized by deadweight, dwt: the tonnes a ship can carry, cargo plus fuel, fresh water and stores. The cargo itself is about 90 % of it. The calculator picks the class that fits your volume and both ports.
MR / Handysize
20,000–60,000 dwt
Typical cargo: ≈ 289,000 bbl
The standard product tanker: diesel, gasoline and jet fuel in cargoes of about 30,000–45,000 t from Baltic and Black Sea ports.
Panamax / LR1
60,000–80,000 dwt
Typical cargo: ≈ 480,000 bbl
Larger product cargoes, often naphtha or diesel on long voyages to Asia, Africa and Latin America; also small crude cargoes.
Aframax / LR2
80,000–120,000 dwt
Typical cargo: ≈ 721,000 bbl
The main tanker of Russian crude exports: Urals from Primorsk, Ust-Luga and Novorossiysk and ESPO from Kozmino mostly load about 100,000 t.
Suezmax
120,000–200,000 dwt
Typical cargo: ≈ 1,028,000 bbl
The largest tankers Russian crude terminals load, about 130,000–140,000 t or 1 million barrels, mostly at Novorossiysk. Our largest crude cargo.
The shadow fleet
Since 2022 much of Russia's oil has sailed on a so-called shadow fleet: mostly older Aframax and Suezmax tankers insured outside the Western clubs, often moving cargoes ship to ship at sea. The sizes and the terminals are the same, so the calculator prices them alike.
Independent inspection
An independent surveyor, the kind of work SGS, Saybolt or Bureau Veritas do, checks quantity and quality at loading and at discharge, then issues the certificates that travel with the bill of lading. Add it under your price

China, the USA and India took more than half of the crude that importing countries reported to the UN. Russia was the third-largest supplier, and nine-tenths of its crude went to two buyers.
